Johnson Equestrian would like to congratulate Danny Mayson for successfully completing her EA NCAS Level 1 Coaching Certificate. Danny was a wonderful trainee, always attentive and so interactive and it was a pleasure to work with her. We asked her to share her reflections on the training process that led her to becoming a fully accredited coach.
What was your riding and horse background?
My first riding experience was on a Sunday afternoon when my grandparents took me to Hampstead Heath in London to ride the donkeys!!!!! This then became a regular weekend outing. I begged my parents to let me have riding lessons. I started riding at a wonderful riding school in Mill Hill where I lived and went on to spend the next 8 years of my life there, first as a student, then working and finally teaching there.
From there I got a job with an international showjumper and spent the next few years “on the road”. I learnt so much in my role as a groom and loved the lifestyle and the excitement of competition.
What motivated you to do our coach training?
I had a very large break from horses and it wasn’t until I had my own children, two girls, that horses reappeared in my life. Both the girls love show jumping and we now own 4 horses.
I have spent a lot of time teaching the girls and their friends and rediscovered that I loved the coaching role. So when we arrived in Sydney and I was introduced to Christine at Johnson Equestrian, I decided to further my skills and enrol in her Coach Training program.
How was your coach training experience?
Christine was very personable and encouraging and made the whole process easy. The course was very adaptable and accommodating allowing for changes in schedules and learning abilities. I found the interaction with all the different students and instructors such a great sounding board with a huge variety of knowledge in all areas.
What advice do you have for aspiring coach trainees starting out?
I would advise anyone starting their training to spend as much time as possible around Christine Johnson and Colleen Brook, as their depth of knowledge and their ability to impart their experience is invaluable.
Where to now for you?
I am hoping to start teaching soon and am really looking forward to putting my new learnt techniques into action!!!!!
