Hi
and welcome to the Feb/March 2007 edition of our TEAM JOHNSON STUDENT
RIDER PROFILES.
This months student profile focuses on Luella Cox, a great
student/competitor and supporter of Team J.
Q: What
do you do?
A: I am a year nine student at The Hills Grammar School.
In my spare time I horse ride, dance and sing.
Q: Tell me about your riding and your horses?
A: I have been riding for about 5 years. In that time I have
had 5 horses. My first pony 'Snowy', sadly died last year. We thought
that she could have been 28 years old and we miss her very much.
I had a lot of memorable experiences with her. She really hated
getting wormed and could smell the paste a mile away. As well as
running away when we tried to catch her, she would do 'mini rears'
when we finally did catch her and it would take ages to worm her.
In the end we managed to calm her fears about the whole process
and she stopped being silly about it.
From there I moved on to our fat chestnut pony 'Ginger'. She was
Snowy's best friend. Ginger was great to learn on though a bit too
slow so we got 'Ollie' who sadly died of cancer. My riding started
to really get going when we were lucky enough to get 'Lorajade'
(Jade) and she loves to JUMP. She won every showjumping competition
we went in and she now has a barrel full of champion ribbons.
My sister now rides Jade and together they are also enjoying the
winners circle. My current horse is 'Ally Kat' (Jed). We are so
lucky to have him. Chrissie found him for us and he has been a great
experience. We now jump up to 80cm and I am very happy with that.
Q: What
are your goals? Long term and short term.?
A: My short term goals are to get better grades this year at
school. My long term goals are to help the environment and to help
endangered species of animals.
Q: Describe some of your successes or most memorable moments
in riding.
A: Well the most successful moment of my life with horses has
to be getting Jed on to the float. He used to refuse to get on. Chrissie
showed me what to do and I had to practise all the time getting him
to "walk forward to the pressure and walk back with the pressure"
as Chrissie would say. Now he walks on the float beautifully and sometimes
has been known to walk on by himself!
The other successful moment was being able to ride Snowy. She could
sometimes be such a pain, a real 'space cadet', always freaking out
about nothing, but I still love her! Another successful moment was
getting over my fear of Jade. Shortly after I got Jade, I became scared
of her. I started to avoid riding her because I was scared she was
going to do something bad to me. I told my parents that I wanted to
sell her and stop riding. They said I could but I had to get her ready
to sell which meant … riding her. Amazingly I fell in love with her
again and we still have her and I am still riding!
Q:
What is your favourite music?
A: I don't have a particular style of music that I like but
at the moment, my favourite song is 'Walking in Memphis' by Marc
Cohn.
Q: What is your favourite food?
A: My favourite food has to be lasagne. Mum makes the best
lasagnes and I love them.
Q: What is your favourite movie?
A: My favourite movie is 'Moulin Rouge'. It is the best musical
ever. I could watch it 20 times in a row and not get tired of it.
Q: What
would you like to be doing in 10 years time?
A: I would like to be helping the wildlife of Australia,
especially the endangered wildlife.
Q: What is your motto for life?
A: My motto in life is to live your days like they're your
last.
Q:
Who inspired you?
A: In my life a lot of people have inspired me. To start
with my Mum and Dad have taught me to be strong, to believe in myself
and to never give up. Chrissie and George have inspired me a lot
with my horse riding. I don't think I would have got this far with
my horse riding if it wasn't for them. Two years ago I wouldn't
have had the confidence to jump at all but now I can do jumping
for fun and not have to worry.
