Hi and welcome to the October edition of our TEAM JOHNSON STUDENT RIDER PROFILES.
This months student profile focuses on Richard Rost, a long time student and supporter of Team J.

Q: What do you do?
A: I've been in the motor trade most of my life and have been in sales selling new Subaru's for the past 16 years. I'm currently based at West Ryde .

Q: Tell me about your riding and your horses?
A: As a young boy I attended riding camps run by the late Mrs Gould of Wilberforce at Willow Park , but didn't really start riding again until about 5 years ago. I went on a trail-riding weekend and decided I wanted to get back in to riding. I bought a 16.3hh ex steeplechaser who was a bit crazy, but taught me to stay on. When I started having lessons with Chrissie she persuaded me to sell him and buy something more suitable. We found “Dallas”, who is a 15.3hh stockhorse and he has been terrific. He is a willing jumper and practically bombproof on the roads.

I Think I had a interest In horses at a early age The well known TV show MR Ed was a favourite of mine and there was a horse in the paddock next to our house I earnt pocket money Feeding it and picking up manure and at a early age I was certain they spoke English. After a year or so nothing came out of this horses mouth, Until one day I was In the paddock I heard a deep voice say “Hey You Richard” There was on one in the paddock I spun around gob smacked and walked over to it. I continued on picking up manure and watching this horse from the corner of my eye. I happened to notice the older boy from next door hiding behind some trees. Whilst I reckon we can interact and communicate with our horses I reckon he well and truly got me on this occasion.

Q: What are your goals? Long term and short term.?
A: I'm giving up smoking and getting fitter and this is my immediate goal. I would like to travel to some more country shows. Dallas is currently jumping around 90cm and I would love to jump confidently over some bigger tracks.

Q: Describe some of your successes or most memorable moments in riding.
A: Memorable ?The first time I jumped my Big Thoroughbred at jump club I was so excited I could hardly sleep the night before. Another memorable occasion and which might be best to forgotten is falling off him in Scheyville National Park, Some one had kindly left the gate open and he ended up on the road at the time I went pale at the thought of him walking over the bonnet of someone's Porsche fortunately neither of us were hurt.

Successes? Well I have managed to collect a few ribbons from Jump Club and St Ives now that hang proudly in my lounge room. One year I took Dallas to The Oberon show mainly for the show jumping on Sunday and although it was sadly rained out, I had made a three hour trip and decided to enter in some hacking classes. I managed to get a few ribbons one for being the best Male Rider over 21, I reckon the lessons have paid off Thanks Chrissie! Best Male Rider HMMM? I don't reckon im that good !

Q: What is your favourite music?
A: My car radio is usually turned to 96.9FM,My CD collection is a mixed bag but seems to have a lot of female vocalists in it. Missy Higins, Delta, Margaret Urlich, Vanessa Amorosi, that my neighbours and I listen to from time to time.

Q: What is your favourite food?
A: I cant pick a favourite I love dining out at any excuse mainly Thai, Japanese, French and Indian Usually with a Margaret River Cab Sav. At home in summer Im often cranking up the BBq at diner time.

Q: What is your favourite movie?
A: Meet The Fockers

Q: What would you like to be doing in 10 years time?
A: I wouldn't mind finding a few acres somewhere peaceful and abit away from the rat race and this is one of my goals. In my dreams? Probably 6 acres at Dural with a circular drive, fenced by white post and rail fencing, some nice bloodlines stabled out the back, with a Ferrari in the 6-car garage and a 50metre lap pool. In reality? I will probably have to settle for a mediocre house, one good show jumper and a used 4WD. Either way is ok by me just so long as I am happy and healthy As I am a single guy at present it would be great to find some one to do all this with

Q: What is your motto for life?
A: Try to bring a smile and a laugh to at least one person a day.
