Team Johnson Monthly Student Profile

www.teamj.com.au

Hi and welcome to the December edition of our TEAM JOHNSON STUDENT RIDER PROFILES.
This month I caught up with
Louise Pickford. When not busy exploring culinary delights and compiling recipes to temp your tastebuds, Louise enjoys getting onboard Sunny and learning new skills. They have come on in leaps and bounds together and are teaching one another many new skills.

Regards
Chrissie Johnson

Louise Pickford

Name: Louise Pickford
Age: 41

CJ: What do you do?
LP:
I am a freelance food writer and stylist, writing recipes for magazines and cook books both here and for overseas. I work closely with Ian, my husband who is a food photographer – I cook and style the food and he photographs it – it’s a fantastic job. I work mainly from home, which is in Newport, by the sea and every day feels like a holiday.

CJ: Tell me about your riding and your horses.
LP:
I grew up in the UK on a farm, my mum rode and worked the National Hunt and I started to ride almost before I could walk. My first pony was called Piglet, a little cheeky Welsh Mountain pony – his favourite trick was to put his head down to eat and then just gallop off with me on board and then stop suddenly – at least he did! It was real yee hah riding, just good fun and no real training. Then like many teenage girls I discovered boys who seemed far more fun (if only I’d known!) and I didn’t ride again until I moved to Australia in 2000.

I met Chrissie when I came to see a horse she was selling – I didn’t buy Jaffa, but had so much fun at Chrissies that we then began the search together for the right horse. After almost 12 months of searching I met Sunny (ironically named for his charming temperament!) and fell in love. He’s a great character and although not always obliging we are gradually learning together.

CJ: What are your goals -short and long term.
LP: Just improving and learning as much as I can – riding is such a special hobby, I can’t believe I was away from it for so long. The last 12 months have been quite challenging with joining both KRC and SSJC, I have just started competing, which is great and sometimes we even do quite well. I would love to compete in some ODE’s over the next 12 months and also I’d be thrilled if I get to jump 1m – that still seems a little too challenging.

CJ: Describe some of your successes in riding.
LP: I have only competed in a few events, I loved the KRC dressage comp at SIEC – despite the sleepless nights beforehand. We didn’t place, but it was great experience. To date the recent Utility day at Clarendon was my best moment – Sunny was on his best behaviour and we placed 3rd in the derby, 1st in jumping equitation and 3rd overall – I was thrilled.
CJ: What makes your life enjoyable and worthwhile?
LP: The people around me, my husband who makes me (and everyone else) laugh, Sunny, Bosco my precious dog, Alfie and Sprout, my 2 cats and all my friends. Moving to the other side of the world was huge but Australia is home and I love it.

CJ: What is your favourite movie?
LP: Fight Club and Snatch (and not just because Brad Pitt’s in both)

CJ: What is your favourite music?
LP: So difficult, but right now it have to be Robbie’s new album

CJ: What is your favourite food?
LP: Pretty much anything, but if I had to have 1 final meal it’d be scallops or maybe fresh crab

CJ: What do you think you will be doing in 10 years time.
LP:
As long as I’m with Ian and still riding I don’t care. I’d love to move to the Byron Bay hinterland and have a few acres with several horses and ride all day.

CJ:
Your motto for life?
LP: Celebrate what you have, listen to your heart and always follow your dreams.
